Five Stars To Shadows In Zamboula

Howard’s swashbuckling hero was more the Conan I prefer – that of the wandering mercenary and thief, than that of a leader of an army or pirate. As always, the writing is superb, with a rhythm and vocabulary that grips you from the very first sentence. Like so much of Howard’s work, Shadows in Zamboula’ story practically leaps off the page and, if you read in bed like I do, banishes sleep until the very last word.

Three Star Reviews Are Bunkum

C’mon people.  Either you like a book or you don’t.  A three star review is the lit evuivalent of meh.  Let’s be honest.  If the book is meh, you’re not going to keep reading.  If you can’t finish it, it’s not a three-star; it’s a one or two at best.

Case in point – Now I know lots of people love it, but I can’t stomach Moby Dick.  I’ve tried.  I’ve given that damned thing multiple, I mean a good six or seven tries over the years, and I’ve never made it past the first ten or fifteen pages.  It’s boring!  I can’t keep reading it.  It’s MEH, and that’s why it gets a single star from me.

I confess I’ve rated books three stars, in the past, but really, I just can’t be stuffed any more.  It’s one, two, four or five.

Me And My Reviews

The other day I made myself some Birthday Resolutions, and one of them was to read 52 books before July 30, 2019.  I’m not sure if I’m going to make that target if I just count full-length novels.  I am, however, having a blast reading novels, and a lot of shorts from some of my favourite classic scribblers.  The likes of Poe, Lovecraft, Howard (R.E.), Leiber, et al are great to re-visit.  Not all of them stand up too well in today’s world, but you onow what?  I don’t care.  If you have a chance, dig some out yourself and dive in.  The water’s warm!

Well, Whaddaya Know?

Right.  The other day I posted about some things I want to do over the next twelve months.  Among them was to read more.  In order to do this, I’ve cut back a bit on the tv I’ve been watching.  You know what?  I’m loving it.  I’ve knocked off two titles in three days.  Not bad, eh?
